What is Amber?

What we know as amber is nothing more than pine resin fossilized millions of years ago. Some conifer trees produced resin to protect themselves from insects, diseases, and other damage. This completely organic substance, later transformed into stone, has retained its natural healing qualities over time. Today, amber is found on beaches, deposited by tides, or extracted in mines. Although amber deposits exist worldwide, those on the Baltic coast consistently yield the best quality and the largest quantity.

Amber boasts a wide color palette, ranging from translucent yellow to opaque dark brown. Some pieces may even contain external objects such as insects or plant fragments, making each one unique. Since time immemorial, amber has fascinated traders and craftsmen worldwide. While some used it as a bargaining chip, others created incredible works of art and jewelry. Additionally, it has always been used by mankind as a remedy. As early as the 18th century, folk medicine recognized amber's effectiveness against headaches, sleep disorders, and convulsions. Today, this knowledge persists, and amber continues to be used as a gemstone in jewelry and decoration, as well as for its healing properties.

In contemporary times, Baltic amber is the primary material used in crafting children's jewelry during the teething period due to its high succinic acid content. This transforms a necklace, bracelet, or ankle bracelet into an effective anti-inflammatory. When heated upon contact with the skin, amber helps soothe pain and provide relief to teething children. Soft and warm to the touch, Baltic amber continues to capture the hearts of children and parents worldwide.

At L'Ambre, we believe that amber is much more than a semi-precious stone. It serves as tangible evidence of natural history, offering mankind its inherent properties over the centuries.
